Post subject: media player crashes

Just recently I have been having problems with my media players (WMP v.7, MPclassic). Every time I load them and try to play a file, they hang and
then I must reboot windows. I've tried updating my video driver,
un-installing and re-installing the players and even restoring the registry
from a few days ago. I have all the most recent windows98 updates and the most current IE/updates. Short of a windows over-install/repair can anyone suggest a fix? I have run virus/spyware, IE repair and even tried to install wmp 6.4 but the same thing happens. The media players become unresponsive and then I have to re-boot.

Thanks.
